Welcome to Evolution Debate

This site is intended as a humble contribution to the increasing debate over evolution.  The idea for this site grew partly out of the desire to have readily available a significant cross section of viewpoints on the debate over evolution.  There is already a wealth of material available on the Internet, but it is occasionally difficult to sift through it without some guidance, and even more difficult at times to locate original sources.

This site is not intended, however, simply to be a list of links.  Rather, I plan to provide occasional commentary and, I trust, insight into the issues surrounding the debate.  Thus, for those new to the debate, it is hoped that this site will serve as a valuable primer on the key issues.  For educators and students, it is hoped that this site will serve as a valuable reference.  For professionals already heavily engaged in the debate, perhaps this site may serve as an occasional resource.

The specific item that piqued my interest and provided the impetus for this site was Charles Darwin’s “The Origin of Species.”  After following the evolution debate for a time, I determined that if I were going to formulate an opinion, I should at least give Mr. Darwin a chance to explain himself.  I began taking notes as I read, and about halfway through the 6th edition I had a growing sense that it might be useful to review the work in a more comprehensive and critical manner.  Thus was born the idea for this site, which I hope one day will include my own detailed reflections regarding Darwin’s positions in The Origin of Species.  The scientific community has of course added, subtracted, refined, and modified Darwin’s original hypotheses into what is now termed the “neo-Darwinian synthesis,” but as the chief formulator of the theory and the chief refuge for the uncertain scholar, Darwin remains for evolutionary theory the ultimate line of defense and the ultimate appeal to authority.

Permission is freely granted to link to and cite from this site, subject to the professional and scholarly courtesy of properly identifying the source.  I will endeavor to provide the same courtesy with respect to the many materials collected and links contained on this site.

As with most locations on the Internet, this site is a work in progress and will be constantly under construction.  The reader is therefore encouraged to check back from time to time to see what is new and how the site has, dare I say, evolved.
